Snorkeling in Trincomalee

Pigeon Island National Park

The jewel of Trincomalee’s marine world is Pigeon Island, tucked just off the shore of Nilaveli. Here the water is shallow, clear, and warm, creating a perfect environment for snorkeling. Staghorn and branching corals form a maze beneath the surface while hundreds of reef fish dart between coral branches.

You float above schools of butterflyfish, clownfish, parrotfish, and surgeonfish. If you're lucky, a reef shark or eagle ray may glide past the deeper parts of the reef. The visibility is exceptional during season, allowing you to see marine life in crisp detail.

Snorkeling with Turtles

Pigeon Island and parts of the Nilaveli reef are among the best places in Sri Lanka to swim with turtles. Green and hawksbill turtles feed gently along the coral gardens and often swim close enough for an unforgettable encounter. Guides always emphasize safe and respectful snorkelling practices, keeping your experience natural and ethical.

Coral Gardens around Trincomalee

Beyond Pigeon Island, the reefs around Nilaveli and Uppuveli offer their own beauty. You find shallow coral shelves made up of brain corals, plate corals, and colourful soft corals that attract everything from damselfish to moray eels. These coral gardens are calm, sheltered and ideal for families or travellers seeking gentle snorkelling sessions.

Diving in Trincomalee

Trincomalee is a premier dive destination, offering a wide range of experiences from beginner friendly reef dives to deeper underwater landscapes.

Dutch Bay Diving

Dutch Bay is one of the most accessible diving hubs in Trincomalee. The bay stretches from Swami Rock toward the southern cove near Governor’s Rock, historically used as a fishing port. Despite boat activity near the shore, its southern section hosts some of the region’s best beginner and training sites.

  • Hospital Reef sits at around 10 meters, making it ideal for first time divers or Open Water training dives. Coral gardens, small reef blocks, and colourful fish create a calm underwater environment perfect for learning.

  • Middle Reef, located deeper at about 19 meters, offers richer reef formations and more marine life. It suits divers with a bit more experience who want to explore beyond the shallow zone.

These sites combine ease of access with varied marine biodiversity, creating a perfect introduction to Trincomalee’s underwater world.

The Underwater Museum and Wreck Sites

Trincomalee is also home to a unique underwater museum created by the Sri Lanka Navy. Located in Sandy Bay, this site features:

  • Two intentionally sunk naval gunboats

  • Sculptures and naval themed artificial reef structures

  • Coral friendly installations designed to foster marine life

The gunboats can be explored externally, offering an accessible wreck experience for recreational divers. Hard corals, marine plants, and schools of fish have already begun to colonize the structures, turning them into thriving artificial reefs. Underwater photographers find this site particularly captivating due to the blend of wreckage, sculpture, and marine life.
